SUMMARY:de Monte Madrigali Spirituali and Sacred Motets with Anita Datta + AGM on10th October 2026
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back Anita Datta for another interesting workshop! \nPhillipe de Monte (1521-1603) was one of the most famous composers of his day. Born in Mechelen\, he worked in Italy\, England\, and the Hapsburg courts of Vienna and Bohemia. Held in high regard by his contemporaries for his kindly personality and excellence as a choirmaster\, he was a hugely prolific composer\, writing over 1100 madrigals and 40 masses\, as well as a large volume of sacred works. These include his published collections of ‘Madrigali Spirituali’\, where sacred texts in the vernacular are set with composing techniques usually reserved for secular poetic writings. We will explore these characteristic pieces in context with examples from his sacred polyphonic writing\, as we get to know this important composer and teacher from the late Renaissance. \n \nAnita Datta is a conductor from East Yorkshire. Known for her work with voices in early music\, she was selected for the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Women Conductor’s programme in 2018\, and has subsequently gained experience in Opera as a member of the Royal Opera House’s Women Conductor Cohort in masterclasses at Covent Garden and The National Opera Studio. She was awarded a scholarship to study Orchestral Conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama\, where she studied with David Jones\, and has worked with the orchestra of Welsh National Opera. She continues to be mentored by Jessica Cottis. Anita is passionate about communicating with new audiences and advocating for diverse voices in the Western Classical Music industry\, which is expressed in both her artistic and wider leadership activities. She sits on the boards of English Touring Opera and the National Centre for Early Music\, drawing on her professional experience and academic background in Social Anthropology to inform policy\, practice and structural change. She frequently provides comment on matters of education and inclusion for commercial and academic publications. She is the founder and artistic director of early music ensemble The Swan Consort\, with whom she has performed at major festivals across the UK and internationally. She is an accomplished organist\, and has studied Indian Classical Music on keyboard and sitar. She draws on all aspects of her rich musical and cultural heritage to offer a fresh and distinctive perspective on the Western Classical canon. \nThe AGM will be at 1pm and will be very short. \nSt Faith and St Laurence Church is on the corner of Balden Road and Croftdown Road.
