Articulating runs of fast notes on the crumhorn

Postby CofE_Reader on Fri Sep 25, 2009 1:04 pm

Ooops. I seem to be hogging the forum :)

The crumhorn technique book I have tells me to tongue every note against the wincap. Seems to work well and sound good. However, runs of quavers together are quite difficult to manage at speed, both in articulating each note clearly, and also in co-ordinating with the fingers.

Is there a different technique with fast runs like this, or is it just a matter of practice?

Many thanks

Glad things are progressing ;)

I hadn't really thought about this for a while so I got out my crumhorn and experimented.

Coordinating fingers is definitely a "practice makes perfect" thing I'm afraid, no shortcuts! However there are a couple of things you can try with the tonguing. I find that straightforward 'TuTuTuTu" works best, but you get more articulation if you try "TuCuTuCu" which is the opposite to recorder playing. TuCu doesn't work for very fast runs though. Also experiment with "Tu-u-Tu-u" (ie only tongue the first note) although depending on speed you may lose crispness. Most important is to ensure a tight seal between the lips and the windcap to avoid breathiness. This becomes difficult if you've been playing for a long session, unless you've been building up your stamina with lots of practice and your embouchure is at peak fitness.

I'd love to hear from any other crumhorn players out there, as I can't guarantee my suggestions are orthodox.

Happy playing.

Caroline. Thanks for the advice, and kind of you to make the effort. I had just wondered if this was simply a restriction on the instrument. I will try your alternatives and keep practising. Given I am aiming for a Christmas concert, I might just create an easy version as a backup. Better to play it well and simply than spectacularly badly.

Thanks again,

Ray

Always good to have a backup plan :)

I have a book of Christmas carols arranged for SATB crumhorns or recorders. It's The Loux Christmas Collection No 2 published by the Loux Music Publishing Co in New York (who refer to Krummhorns). No idea if it's still available. I've had my copy for years, but never heard the contents played by just crumhorns although I've had a go with various unlikely combinations for fun. It's got a couple of older carols which are sensible crumhorn fodder, but also Jingle Bells and Silent Night for novelty value!
I regret to say that on the back of this book they list other publications, including "Krummy Kuartet for Krummhorn Konsort" by John R Phelps. Groan

Any crumhorn players who might like to get together for an informal playthrough some time, do get in touch - you can send me a PM if you're signed up.
